Legend has it that the 12th Earl of Epsom and Lord Derby sat here in our very own Swan dining room back when it was a Coaching Inn and we had stables. The conversation turned to horse racing and they placed a small bet between themselves, this was the beginning of one of the most world-renowned horse races. The first race took place on 4th May 1780.
